RCH 1907 7 Plank JL Davies #121 (side doors only). Loads Auran bulk loads, LARS
Coal, Bauxite, Iron Ore and Limestone aggregate.
10 ton wagons were superceeded by the 12 ton version from the 1920s onwards but despite this many remained in service up until 1939, in fact at this date of the also half a million privately owned or operated wagons nearly half were the older 10 ton version. Many had been built with brakes on only one side but by the 1930s most had been modernised with a second set of independent brake gear. After 1939 any wagons that not been rebuilt were scrapped.
Side door only wagons were favoured by local coal merchants rather than operators delivering to large industrial customers where end door wagons were generally used as uploading was carried out by mechanical wagon tipplers.
Note that after 1940 PO wagons were repaired using unpainted planks and would not have been seen in this condition in the 1940s and 1950s. Very few if any would have survived into the 1960s.
