Western Flyer Class T8 Trolley Bus

It was 1966. With no North American manufacturer of new electric trolley busses, and with the cost of importing new equipment from Europe now prohibitive, the TTC decided to launch a rebuilding program. Two vehicles were sent off, one to Western Flyer in Winnepeg, the other overseas to an English firm. Only one was returned to the TTC: the Western Flyer model, the T8, or E700-a. The other was never completed, and was scrapped in England.

After conducting a full set of running tests on the prototype, the vehicle was returned to Western Flyer for further modifications, and the program began in earnest in August of 1970.

Over the next 2 years, 51 such vehicles went through the rebuilding program, the last one being completed by the end of April, 1972. The T8's would go on to serve Toronto until the beginning of the 1990s, when their age, neglect, and neglect of the infrastructure at last spelt the end of trolley busses on the streets of Toronto.

A few of them have been preserved at Halton County Radial Railway Museum.
