The M62 is a Soviet-built diesel locomotive for heavy freight trains, exported to many Eastern Bloc countries as well as to Cuba, North Korea and Mongolia. Besides the single locomotive M62 also twin versions 2M62 and three-section versions 3M62 have been built. A total number of 7,164 single sections have been produced, which have been used to build 5,231 single-, twin- and three-section locomotives

According to the Comecon directives production of heavy diesel locomotives among Eastern Bloc countries was left exclusively to Romania and the Soviet Union. The M62 was developed by the Vorohsilovgrad Locomotive Factory (today: Luhansk Locomotive Factory) on order of Hungary. The M62 designation originates from the Hungarian order, as the Hungarian railways previously ordered Swedish locomotives called M61 in Hungary. The Soviets disliked this and forced Hungary to buy Soviet locomotives, but the USSR did not have suitable diesel locomotives at the time, spurring the development of the type. The first few prototypes of this heavy freight locomotive were ready in 1964 and the first buyer outside the Soviet Union was Hungary. A total number of 3,273 units were produced in the Soviet Union.

Zwischen 1975 und 1982 wurden 197 HST-Triebköpfe in den Crewe-Lokomotivwerken gebaut. Als Ersatz für veraltete Lokomotiv-Züge auf den Strecken von Paddington nach Bristol und South Wales und später auch auf der Hauptlinie zwischen Kings Cross und Leeds wurden die HST-Verbände bei den Passagieren sehr beliebt, da sie die Reisezeit sehr verkürzten. 


Die Triebköpfe haben Achsfolge Bo Bo und einen Dieselmotor von Paxman Valenta mit 2250 PS. Ein HST-Verband mit je einer Einheit an den Enden verfügt über eine Zugleistung von 4500 PS. 


Der Inter City 125 ist der schnellste Dieselzug der Welt, er stellte im November 1987 den Rekord von 148,5 km/h ein.

Zastepowaly one starzejace sie sklady poczatkowo w polaczeniach ze stacji Paddington do Bristolu i Poludniowej Walii, a pózniej na glównej linii ze stacji King's Cross do Leeds. Dzieki krótszym czasom przejazdów wkrótce staly sie bardzo popularne wsród pasazerów.

W listopadzie 1987 roku pociag Inter City 125 ustanowil rekord predkosci: 148,5 mph i zostal najszybszym pociagiem spalinowym na swiecie.

Lokomotivy Trídy 43 mají usporádání pojezdu typu Bo-Bo a jsou poháneny dieselovým motorem Paxman Valenta o výkonu 2250 koní. Jedna vlaková souprava se dvema lokomotivami má tedy výkon 4500 koní. 

Vlak InterCity 125 tažený temito lokomotivami se stal v listopadu 1987 nejrychlejším dieselovým vlakem na svete, když prekonal rychlost 148.5 mph (239 km/h).
