American Locomotive Company DL500 'World Series'
Known as the 'World Series', the ALCo DL500 with it's gauge adaptable bogies, and in it's various incarnations has served several railways worldwide in Spain, Greece, Peru, India, Pakistan, Argentina & Australia. . The reasonably low axle loading of these handsome machines made them versatile units suited to a range of operating conditions and traffic.
A squarish nose and front windows make the DL500 a distinctive cab unit, styling is reminiscant of it's handsome and popular North American ancestor, the FA. There were three versions of different ratings, the most notable variation being a dual cab version used in Australia.
Built by Goodwin under license from ALCO, the Australian DL500 played an important role displacing large steam traction in the late 50's and 60's; and lashed into multiples of 2 or 3 units, were a common sight on the NSW and SA systems, and in later years also worked into Victoria, Queensland, and occasionally Western Australia.
The SAR 930 Class was delivered between 1955 & 1967. The first 6 units were single ended, the remaining 31 were of the dual cab variety. Class leader number 930 is preserved at the Port Dock Station Museum in South Australia, and Steamranger in the south have also saved 2 units from the scrap heap.
This reskin depicts 961 in The Explorer livery as it was when it was repainted. The Explorer was a short-lived train run by Australian National that toured across the remaining BG lines north of Adelaide between 1993 and 1994. While it was popular with non-Explorer carriages having to be put on the train to cater for extra demand, new management at AN decided to end the train.
Many thanks to Rob for allowing me to release this reskin. Please note I have added an auto-numbering system which automatically sets the number to 961, though I have replaced the number 2's textures with 1's textures so I can place a number range in the auto numbering system instead of a single number which it doesn't seem to like, with the range in this case being 961-962 but it will show up as 961 each time.
