By the start of the 1980’s NSWGR required more hoppers for the growing Hunter Valley Coal fields and after the success of the earlier 100t gross varieties, a new design was done and between 1982 & 1990, 877 of this hopper type where built by EPT, Alcan & Goninan.
Initially 300 were ordered from EPT in 1981 these coded NHFF were built at Port Kembla, a further 300 were to same spec were ordered during construction. After these 600 NHFF, 100 additional were ordered mainly for southern coal division and coded as NHJF, these were the last built by EPT at Port Kembla. 2 prototypes fully Aluminium hoppers were built coded NHMH, and finally 175 NHKF were built by Goninan at their Lansdowne site.

10 recoded as BGKF after sale to SSR and converted to grain traffic now numbered 1233-1242

43200-43375 delivered as NHKF
132 recoded as BGKF after sale to SSR and converted to grain traffic now numbered 1101-1232
30 of these were written off in 2 accidents – 7 at Beresfield 23/10/1997 & 23 on Leigh Creek line 29/06/2011
12 were retained by PN after sale of Leigh Creek coal consist to SSR, these were used on Blue Scope internal coal trains at Port Kembla till 2020 when dispatched for scrap

42998-42999 delivered as NHMH
These other 2 have slight body differences to the rest both were NHMH for full career however 42498 has somehow been incorrectly numbered 42989G circa 2017. Both cut up 2021.
