The EMD GT22 series was first introduced in 1972 following the rise in popularity of six-axle locomotives. The GT series now featured a turbocharger that increased power based on customer feedback. The GT series also used six-axle HTC bogies, allowing the locomotive to haul heavier loads at slower speeds with minimal wheel slip. The GT22C series also gave itself several individual designations based on customer feedback. Standard suffixes after the model designation were a U or W suffix to indicate the type of traction motors. C usually indicates six axle trucks but due to a six axle locomotive being too large for most second and third world countries, EMD developed the suffix L to indicate the locomotive was built with a Lightweight frame. The EMD Dash 2 locomotive also became a popular choice for export railways in the late 1970s.
