In 1956 the North American firm American Locomotive Co., formalizes the provision of 130 electric diesel locomotives, of the RSD-16 type for the Argentine Republic. Three contracts are signed, S-3290 for 30 locomotives for the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Railway, units 4601 to 4630; S-3291 for 55 locomotives for the General Bartolomé Miter Railway, units 5601 to 5655 and S-3292 for 45 locomotives, 4301 to 4345 for the General San Martín Railway.
Construction began in 1957 and its delivery and commissioning in our country took place between 1958 and 1959.
These locomotives are of the mixed type and suitable for all kinds of traffic, with the classic second generation diesel locomotive configuration, being the forward position with the long nose in the direction of travel.
The peculiarity of these locomotives is that of having been the only 'domestic' model of North American origin, for use in the United States, Mexico and Canada, that our railways had in the state era.
They were built at the Schenectady plant in New York State, with frames and powerplant produced by ALCo. The electrical part, as was traditional since the origins of this manufacturer, was provided by General Electric, and the dual-type brake system, compressed air - vacuum, model 6-SLAV was provided by Westinghouse.
