A variant of the class 478 EMU, the class 478/5 is the first of the 47x series of EMUs to be built by Quantum Systems after acquiring W.E.N TT, and is a 6-car EMU designed for Hayden Trains' Wendsey X-City services, although they also work SIGMA Transport's Watley Line. Despite the slight cosmetic differences, the 478/5 is functionally identical to the 478/4 under the hood, meaning Quantum could get them in service quickly.
32 units were built by Quantum Systems, and 23 are currently in service with Hayden Trains (478501-478523), primarily working the Wendsey X-City Glassworthy/Motherford to Harrington via Roybirch line, and 9 with SIGMA (478524-478532) working Watley Line services.
