The LNER K3 was one of Gresley's original concepts. When planned in 1917, it was to have only two cylinders but after the roaring success of the O2 class, Gresley redesigned his new express goods engine for three cylinders, giving it a huge 6ft boiler diameter to supply enough steam and a whopping 36 percent increase in power. The first ten could often be seen on express passenger trains for economy during the 1921 strikes, and even though they rode roughly, they proved highly capable mixed-traffic engines.
This version represents the post-1946 renumbering version, with numbers 1800-1992.
