A Southern Railway 63' 'waffle-side' boxcar.
Reporting marks SOU 565300.
The Southern Railway Co. owned a large fleet of 'waffle-side' boxcars, and also an even larger fleet of their shorter 52' version. This is the early version of the 63' (over strikers) 'waffle-side' boxcar which were purchased by the Southern Railway Co. The first order of these cars came equipped with the Hennesy car door openers, which were intended to help customers in opening & closing the car doors when spotted for pick-up / delivery. Unfortunately the Hennesy car door openers were somewhat fragile under normal railroad operating conditions, and quite often due to damage became more of a hinderance than help. As the car door openers became inoperative over time, the railroad chose to remove them completely from the cars, rather than continue to dump more money into maintaining them and trying to keep them working. Later orders of these cars did away with the car door openers entirely. This particular model shows a car which has had the car door openers and the rack rails removed completely. The doors themselves have been exchanged for the later Youngstown style doors.
This car also has the simpler style Southern copy, without the Green Light tagline, and the green dot in the center of the 'O' of SOUTHERN.
A big thanks to SR6900 from the Trainz Discussion Forums for providing me a link to this awesome drawing I used for reference in building this model: http://southernmodeler.info/Hundman/SR_Waffle-Side_Box_Car_1979_MM_Oct_1983.pdf
