This is a GE 44-tonner Switcher. Built in 1944 for use in industry and shortline switching applications. The 44-tonner was designed to comply with a 1937 industry agreement that permitted one-man operation of diesels weighing less than 90,000 pounds.
The Virginian owned only one of these small switcher, its #6, and use it to switch industries in Virginia's Tidewater region. Orginally Built as New Haven Railroad #0806 in December 1941,it was used at Washburn Wire in Rhode Island for a year befro heading for the Virginian.
Virginian purchased this critter secondhand to take over a job that used 2 small 1905-era 0-8-0's.
