In 1939 General Motors Electro - Motive Division issued a challenge to the supremacy of steam traction with the introduction of the FT class.

Although proven as capable traction for passenger traffic, many were sceptical of the ability of diesels to haul freight. GM launched an 11 month tour of 35 states and 20 Class 1 railroads demonstrating the advantages of modern traction.

The FT class (F for freight T for 2700 hp with b-unit) proved a capable machine, hauling more freight, using less fuel and requiring less maintenance than any steam locomotive. Several units could be combined to meet horsepower requirements; this ability to 'lash' several units together, meant that a single crew could operate them using 'multiple unit' controls.

Originally designed for freight, F-units were widely used on passenger services, many being fitted with boilers for passenger car heating.

Over 7600 A & B units were built between 1939-1960 ending with the FL9, making them the top selling cab unit of all time. The F unit inspired a more colourful era in the history of railroads, as several operators adourned the art deco carbodies with flamboyant liveries such as the famous Santa Fe 'warbonnet' scheme.

1939 begann General Motors Electro-Motive Division mit der Einführung der FT-Klasse, die Überlegenheit des Dampfantriebs in Frage zu stellen. 


Obwohl Dieselmaschinen ihre Zugkapazitäten im Passagierverkehr unter Beweis gestellt hatten, bestand doch Skepsis über ihre Eignung für den Güterverkehr. GM startete eine 11monatige Tour durch 35 Staaten, bei der 20 Class 1-Loks die Leistung des neuen Antriebs demonstrierten. 


Die FT-Klasse (F für Fracht, T für 2.700 PS mit B-Einheit) erwies sich als fähige Maschine, die mehr Fracht schleppen konnte und dabei weniger Treibstoff und Wartung brauchte als jede Dampflokomotive. Mehrere Einheiten konnten aneinander gekoppelt werden, um die erforderliche PS-Zahl zu erreichen, und trotzdem reichte eine Mannschaft zur Bedienung. 


Die ursprünglich für den Frachtverkehr entwickelten F-Einheiten wurden auch oft im Passagierverkehr eingesetzt, wobei viele mit zusätzlichen Boilern für die Abteilbeheizung ausgerüstet wurden. 


Zwischen 1939 und 1960 wurden 7600 A- und B-Einheiten gebaut, die die Reihe am Ende (mit der FL9) zur bestverkauften Führerstand-Einheit aller Zeiten machte. Die F-Einheit inspirierte auch zu einer bunteren Ära in der Geschichte der Eisenbahnen, da viele Betreiber die Rümpfe ihrer Maschinen mit schwungvollen Logos verzierten, wie beispielsweise das berühmte Santa Fe-Schema.

Originariamente progettate per il trasporto merci, le unità F furono largamente usate per il servizio passeggeri, dato che molte erano dotate di caldaie per il riscaldamento delle vetture passeggeri. 

Più di 7.600 unità A e B furono costruite nel periodo 1939-1960 per finire con la FL9, diventando così la carrozza più venduta di tutti i tempi. V roce 1939 firma General Motors Electro - Motive Division poprvé ohrozila nadrazenost parní trakce uvedením dieselové lokomotivy trídy FT. 

Již od pocátku bylo jasné, že zejména v osobní doprave se nová dieselová trakce dokáže parní trakci minimálne vyrovnat. Vetšina odborníku však byla velmi skeptická ohledne použití i na nákladních vlacích. Firma General Motors proto usporádala jedenáctimesícní turné po 35 amerických státech a 20 nejznámejších tratích, na kterém hodlala demonstrovat výhody moderní dieselové trakce. 

Lokomotivy trídy FT (F znamenalo nákladní/freight a T bylo vyjádrením výkonu až 2700 koní pri propojení s jednotkou B) dokázaly s nižší spotrebou paliva a menšími nároky na údržbu prepravit více nákladu než jakákoliv parní lokomotiva. Navíc mohlo být v prípade potreby vyššího výkonu spraženo nekolik lokomotiv dohromady a díky nové technologii bylo možno celou soupravu ovládat z jediné lokomotivy. 

Ackoliv byly lokomotivy puvodne urceny pro nákladní vlaky, mnoho z nich bylo dodatecne vybaveno parogenerátory pro vytápení vozu a mohly tak být nasazeny i na osobní vlaky. 

V letech 1939-1960 bylo vyrobeno více než 7600 kusu (soucet jednotek A i B) techto lokomotiv. Záverecná série mela oznacení FL9. Lokomotivy trídy F vešly do povedomí železnicních fanoušku i svým vzhledem, nebot mnoho spolecností je opatrilo pusobivými barevnými nátery. Jednou z nejznámejších byla napríklad cerveno-stríbrná lokomotiva Santa Fe.
