The Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway built a new class of engine at Grand Canal Street in the 1900s, these were built based on the Saint Class XXI, the standard XXIV Class were built with round topped boilers however the XXIVa Class were built with Belpaire Boilers. These were built for Surburban Dublin going as far as Bray and Greystones and continued to do throughout GSR and CIE. In an atempt to improve the public image of Irish Railways, in 1948 several engines that were exclusively passenger engines were painted in a new dark green lined with black and white.
