In 1986, BREL unveiled 10 innovative coaches at their works in Derby. The were a modified design of the MK3, intended to be used as an promotional International Train to attract orders from British Rail and overseas. The coaches were put into service on the London Euston-Manchester route for one year before being stopped and instead used for empty test loads for the Class 89. To try get oversea orders, two coaches were sent to Hamburg in 1988 but with no orders made, they returned. After being stored in Derby for many years, they were sold to Iarnrod Eireann in 1994 and were marketed as the Cu na Mara train, used exclusivily for the Dublin-Galway line. The Cu na Mara set was withdrawn in 2008 and 2 of the 10 were privatly bought separatly and brought to Naas. One was sucessfully repurposed as a restaurant while the other stored in Killashee House Hotel for a future project that never came and was eventually scrapped.
