A workday at the Durango - Silverton RR

A bit of imagination goes a long way here. Philskene, as far as I know, invented this form of session play and all credit goes to him for this one. Go here for further explanation:

You play the role of YardMaster, Dispatcher, yard crew and Engineer.

Starting in Durango a string of freight has already arrived and been left in the yard south of the Passenger Station. A string of Coal Hoppers are spotted at the siding for the Coal Tower. A string of log skeletons, boxcars and coal hoppers have already been assembled for delivery to Silverton. Hook up to them then add a caboose when ready. The three log skeleton cars get dropped off at Teft logging spur. Load them up with logs then take them into Silverton. After taking care of business in Silverton the log skeletons can be taken to Durango along with the empties from Silverton.

In map view, with labels turned on, one can see the IND labels for the various industry drops. Take note of them then go to a boxcar, select the TRAIN icon, then select the '?' in lower right corner of the train tab. Cliking on a boxcar will bring up a window showing what it is loaded with. The Yardmaster can then determine where that boxcar gets delivered. Using the steam locomotive of choice, manuvere through the yards, coupling to the boxcars then deliver to the appropriate IND*****.

The string of coal cars get distributed to the various IND coal drops in Durango. One or two can also be backed into the coal tower drop for automatic unloading.

To unload a boxcar at an IND**** is to repeat the procedure to determine what is loaded on or in the flatcar or boxcar then clik on the X icon to delete or unload the commodity. As stated earlier, a bit of imagination go a long way.


Leaving Silverton.

Gather the empties and the loaded log skeletons for delivery to Durango.


Silverton Operations.

There are two locomotives in Silverton. Use your choice or both to gather the empties and assemble a string in the yards for the Durango Engineer to couple to. When done with that navigate to the 2 Silver mines south of town and couple up to the string of 4 ore hoppers. Pull up to the mine to line up with the ore drops and stop. Automated process will occur filling the hoppers with silver ore. Pull hoppers to the siding and uncouple. Navigate to the other mine and repeat process. Once uncoupled the locomotive can be delivered back to town. The various freight cars can be distributed to the appropriate IND**** to complete the workday. The log skeletons and empties are probably all the little steam loco can handle for trip to Durango. It is advised to use a Silverton loco to get the ore cars and deliver to Durango Smelter. The loco could be used to deliver freight to Silverton.

Back at Durango.

The empties from Silverton can be left in the yard south of Passenger Station for pickup later. The empty coal hoppers can be refilled at the coaling tower. The ore hoppers can be delivered and emptied at the smelter west of the river.

The Passenger consist sitting in front of the Durango Passenger Station can be filled with passengers and driven to Hermosa, Rockwood and finally Silverton.

Most of the track is in poor condition. Speeds in excess of 30mph causes severe train rocking/sway. Not all areas are marked with speed signs. Common sense and experience are required. Some switches may need to be changed for proper navigation.

That concludes the day of operations for the RR. Including the passenger run, it should take 4 to 6 hours to complete everything. The operations, switching and deliveries are completely open ended. Meaning the choice is up to you the yardmaster.
