Waffle side boxcar 50 ft. painted for the long gone Detroit, Bay City & Western RR. Provided with ARN.
The DBCW was one of the last railroads built in Michigan in the 1910s. It survived into the 1950s before being abandoned. At one time it connected Bay City with Port Huron, MI through a broad arcing route in the Thumb region of Michigan. On October 27, 1916, it completed its last segment, from Peck to Port Huron via Tappan and the GTW. Following financial collapse, the ends of the line were abandoned and the tracks from Roseburg north to Caro were sold to the Detroit, Caro & Sandusky Railway (using the same tracks left). The line from Roseburg to Peck closed in 1937. It had a extremely large wooden trestle in Ruby, MI which in the end was abandoned only after about 12 years of use due to maintenance costs. The railroad was never really profitable and declined after WWII sharply. This reskin honors this Michigan Fallen Flag, as if it still had a shortline of its own.
Railroads and industries they served were looking for a quicker way, more cost effiecient way to load box cars - or more specifically to secure the loads inside. Normal box cars required extra labor using various devices inside the cars to secure loads. The Waffle style box car was a result of stronger, better steel... the waffle indentations made for much easier securing of loads inside the car. This was a big advantage to the automotive industry. Wrapped and secured pallets could be fork lifted into the box cars and then more easily secured to prevent damage. This was the motivation behind the development of the waffle side box car. Most of them were at least 50 feet in length.
