From March 1980 through to July 1980 ELX wagons numbered 9, 18, 26, 27, 28, 31, 34 and 49 had their doors removed and timber bolsters fitted to the floor and recoded VOEX for Steel Slab traffic between Albury, NSW and Long Island, Vic. These wagons never went on the Standard Gauge, while at Albury loads where moved from SG wagons to BG wagons rather than bogie exchange, about 1982/83 the side bodies where removed and stanchion's fitted like the VODX wagons. From March 1984 VOBX wagons numbered 42, 53, 62 and 65 where converted to VOEX however this time the sides where lowered and numbered 9 to 12, sometime in 1984 these where stored in Newport pending the same conversion, the conversions where probably done in the end of 84 or early 85 around the time the VODX where converted to VOEX. The mesh is based on VOEX 1 under frame arrangment and will look different to numbers 2 through to 8. Going into 1987 all VOEX where recoded VKEX and fitted with extra stanchions. The extra stanchions may have been fitted in 1987 at North Melbourne Workshops when they where recoded or between 1989 to 1991 during their lift period and repaint at North Bendigo Workshops. From 1991/92 these where also seen at Mile End on South Australian steel traffic. These where recoded to RKEX in late 1994 handing over the rollingstock to the Federal Government operator National Rail Corporation and remaind on the Broad Gauge until April 1995 then they all went on the Standard Gauge.
This Model represents the Type 1 VKEX wagons numbered 1 to 8 from early 1990 on Broad Gauge with the extra stanchions, lowered timber bolsters and repaint, Step's created by Zec.
