From 1977 their was a shortage of container stock on the Broad Gauge with most bogie container wagons being flung around Australia on Standard Gauge, other rollingstock not designed for container traffic such as ELX where also used, a large number of T Vans and U Vans set to be scrapped where put on hold to be converted to KMQ container. The current KMQ's already in service where withdrawn between 1980 to 1985 due to their age which where built off frames from 1910's and 1930's. The new batch of KMQ's getting converted where built from the last batch of U Vans with lever handbrake built from 1946 to 1952 and numered 1267 to 1466. The KMQ's entered service from 1981. In 1983/84 they where stenciled with computerisation check letter. From 1989 through to 1990 these where taken off register as their was new stock added to the container traffic such as VFLX to VQLX in 1987, VQWW from 1989 and VFKX to VQKX in 1990, some of the remaining KMQ's where fitted with Sleeper Discharge containers and used on Way & works trains into early to mid 1990's. By 1990 all of the lever handbrake KMQ's where off register with some stored around Bendigo and Melbourne Yards until they where scrapped.
Common locations they where seen around are Flinders Street Yard, Tottenham Yard, Denilliquin, Appleton Dock, Sunbury, Wodonga, Numurkah, Benalla, Dandenong, Shepparton, Albury, Port Melbourne, North Geelong Yard, Camperdown, Newmarket, Woodend, Castlemaine, Bendigo, Yarragon, Warragul, Echuca, Warnambool, Williamstown Pier, Maryvale, Jewell and Wangaratta, a flat wagon with a ramp to the goods platform was used to load and unload containers without lifting them off the wagon.
This model represents the Type 3 KMQ's with lever handbrake and numbered 210, 211, 215, 221 to 223, 242 to 246, 248 to 251, 256 to 258, 260 to 262, 275 and 276 from 1987 to 1990. Step's created by Zec.
