This enginespec is for the Victorian Railways Y Class 0-6-0 Locomotive built 1887 Kitson & Co. Leeds Engineering England and 1889 Phoenix Foundry Ballarat.
This physic is set to the real values of the locomotive, The Y Class also had a poor performing boilers due to it being small in size and fireman would stuggle to keep boiler pressure up. Try to keep the boiler close to 105-115PSI for average tractive effort, working the loco hard at slow speeds with cut-off too far foward will drop the boiler down rapidly.
When asending Grades the Regulator should be 100% and cut-off close to mid gear to keep steam-chest up to pressure 'I use 25% cut-off with schedule load of 100%'. In the event of stalling the load should be recalculated and Tender water also counted to the total Train weight, if stalling is the result of low pressure put the brakes on and use the blower till you've got 125PSI+ boiler pressure, the Y Class has a high starting tractive effort due to it's high adhesion and small wheels and it'll lift any load from a stand on the grade. When going down Grades the cut-off must be full gear and regulator open slightly to prevent cylinder back pressure, the fire will cool when coal drops 70% and lower also with water level 80~90% sight glass while working, injecting water into the boiler in large amounts at a time while stationary will also pop safeties because adding water to a close vessel also add pressure, when resting the loco for a while bank the coal to 125% if you plan on leaving it for a while.
If Automatic Fireman: True, only the Blower needs to be used, the automatic fireman ONLY keeps water 70% and coal 100% and does nothing else, if boiler pressure needs to be raise from a stand use the Blower!
DCC Users: This e-spec has been re-worked and the boiler will avgerage 80-110PSI at high speeds, only after you've been running at high speeds and come to a stand the safeties will pop, but won't be on for more than 2 mins.
