The London Underground A Stock was built by Cravens of Sheffield between 1960 and 1963 in two batches, the first batch known as A60 stock was introduced into service on the Metropolitan line as part of the Metropolitan Line modernisation scheme in June 1961. The second batch, known as A62 was introduced later in 1962.
The A stock spent most of its time in service on the Metropolitan Line but some 4 car sets were allocated to the East London Line sporadically between 1977 - 2007.
Due to the long length of the Metropolitan Line, the design had to be a compromise between the needs of outer suburban and urban passengers using the Circle Line. The seating was of the Transverse 3 + 2 layout, very unusual for London Underground Trains, and as built could reach 70mph, making them the fastest trains on LU although after the refurbishment program carried out between 1993 - 1997 their speed was curtailed to 50mph.
During the refurbishment program the interiors were re-upholstered, car end windows added and the livery changed to the LUs white, red and blue livery.
Between 2011 - 2012 the A stock was withdrawn to be replaced by the S8 Stock. With the final passenger service operating in September 2012. The A stock was one of the longest serving EMUs in Britain second only to the ex 1938 Stock operating in the Isle of Wight.
This model depicts it in post 90s refurbishment up to withdrawal condition.
The formation of the Metropolitan sets were: DM + T + T + UNDM + UNDM + T + T + DM
The East London Line sets were formed as: DM + T + T + DM
