Formation: DTC + TSO + MBSO + DTC
4VEP in NSE refurbished condition. NSE begun refurbishing it's fleet of 4VEPs in 1988, completing the program in 1995. Refurbishment entailed, converting a part of the Luggage van in the MBSO into additional passenger accomodation, the fitting of a headlight, some enhancements to the interior, and the most noticeable feature, painting the front end cable recesses and the space between the top of the corridor connection and the roof, black. This livery on the majority of VEPs lasted until the late 90s/ early 2000s, when they were repainted into new privatisation colour schemes, however a few examples survived in this condition until withdrawal in 2005.
The British Rail Class 423 4-VEP (Vestibule Electro Pneumatic) 3rd Rail EMU was argueably the backbone of British Rails Southern region fleet for 38 years (1967 - 2005), although intended for semi stopper work, they were often seen on express and suburban services as well. They were the most numerous of all Southern EMU types, with 194 built, they operated on all three Southern Region Divisions (Those being South Eastern, South Central and South Western Divisions).
