A wooden staff to authorise drivers to traverse track sections protected by the Ordinary Staff & Ticket (OST) safeworking system.
Staffs protecting adjacent track sections were always different in 'pattern'. For the model OST system, a Pattern C staff is red and is keyed to open a ticket box configured for the same pattern only.
