Guided metal rods joined lengthwise in runs of up to several hundred metres, as used by NSWGR to transfer the action of a remote lever to the switch rails of a point (turnout).
Multiple rods headed in the same direction were commonly clustered laterally through common guide locations. Adjacent rod guides interlocked together. In this case there are 7 rods in the run.
