In red and cream livery introduced in 1954. English Electric design, first batch ordered 1947. First 20 built by Vulcan Foundary and remaining 12 by Dick Kerr Works. Claimed to be the first main line diesels on a Government owned system in Australia when entering service in Sept 1950. Powered by English Electric four-stroke six cylinder 6SRKT engine turbo charged to 495kW at 750 rpm. Last of class withdrawn from service in 1988. X1 preserved by the Tasmanian Transport Museum, X10 and X18 by the Derwent Valley Railway Society and X4 by the Don River Railway. X3 and X20 went to Bellarine Peninsular Railway in Victoria in 1988. Appropriate running numbers in this livery would be 1-15 and 17-32. X16 carried nameboard Festival of Britain. Numbers 9, 12, 14, 22 and 28 were converted to XA Class between 1961 and 1970.
