These diesel hydraulic locomotives were constructed for British Railways between 1958-1959 by the North British Locomotive Co., Glasgow. They were fitted with a MAN W6V 17.5/22AS engine of 330hp, and Voith L24V transmission. Fitted with vacuum brakes, the locos were allocated to the ER and LMR. Due to a suplus of shunting locos the class were withdrawn en masse in 1967, and scrapped soon after. Three similar locos were also constructed for use with the National Coal Board, and one of these has been preserved at the Chasewater Railway, Staffordshire.
