These diesel hydraulic locomotives were constructed for British Railways between 1958-1961 by the North British Locomotive Co., Glasgow. They were fitted with a MAN W6V 17.5/22A engine of 225hp, and Voith L33YV transmission. Fitted with vacuum brakes, they were often used in goods yards within Scotland's central belt, particularly in the Edinburgh area. The class was withdrawn by British Rail in the late 1960s, due to lack of work. Many subsequently passed into industrial use, and two have been preserved.
