Rock island and a few other railroads experimented with the remarkable “Vert-a-Pak” auto carrier. At the time a normal tri-level auto carrier could carry only 18 cars about and an articulated one (auto-max) could only hold 22. The Vert-a-Pak could hold 30 cars parked on their nose.
The Vert-a-Pak only operated between 1971 and 1977. It was designed to carry strictly the Chevrolet Vega. After production of the Vega series was stopped all the cars where scraped.
