In 1971 there were two operational class 01 shunters based at the Holyhead Breakwater. D2954 is in use today and runs to the Quarry to pick up 4 quarry wagons. It then places the wagons under the gantry crane for loading with stone. Afterwards it runs onto the Breakwater to the travelling crane which is located at the middle loop and the wagons are unloaded. D2954 has been developing mechanical trouble during the day and is causing enough concern for the other shunter D2955 to be called into use. D2955 runs to the quarry and shunts another 4 quarry wagons together for loading at the gantry. It then transports these wagons to join D2954 at the middle loop and it's wagons are also unloaded. The decision has now been made to remove D2954 from it's train and run it to the farthest loop along the Breakwater allowing D2955 to continue the duties for the rest of the day. D2955 joins both sets of empty wagons together and propells these back to the Wharf for stabling. By this time D2954 is now declared a failure so D2955 has to run back along the Breakwater to retrieve it. D2955 then returns D2954 to the depot for attention and stables the failed shunter at the rear of the shed...could this have been D2954's last run?
