Misc.Accessory Series Dustbin Lid part open
The MAS series contains what would be known in Film/Stage/TV circles as 'set dressing' - smaller items added to the overall scene to give it character by adding details of an appropriate locale and period.
In the days before wheelie bins and kerbside recycling, dustbins were the almost universal method of refuse disposal, with a weekly collection as the general rule.
Almost everything went in, from food waste to packaging and ashes from the coal fire: there was rarely a limit on the number of bins a household could have or their exact size, so a couple or even three of different capacities were not uncommon.
Even though they were usually made from galvanised metal, the rough handling they suffered during manual collection meant that they became battered and showed increasing signs of wear quite quickly.
Clangingy noisy and revoltingly noisome, a breeding ground for insects and a ready source of food for rats, cats and urban foxes, they're one of the less-missed everyday items from the (relatively) recent past.
