Modular Factory Kit Metal Box Arbroath Front Unit 2
Metal Box's Factory in Arbroath opened in the early 1960s and is still in use, although now occupied by a different company, Presentation Products. It stands in full view of the ECML just across the Dundee Road on the western approach to the town, facing open parkland and the sea. Originally it was served by sidings fed from a reverse spur off the old Carmyllie branch, which left the ECML at Elliot Junction, just down the road.
Rather than produce the factory in one huge unit, I've split it up into modules so that you can create your own factory as
well as the original, by using whichever parts suit. Normally you'd need at least a front and back unit, two side walls and
a roof unit. The original is six units long and three roofs deep, with side walls only at the extremities.
This second front unit has four different faces again. Two of then have inset entry doors: the one with the door to the left
of the full length stairwell is as per the prototype, and is the fourth unit from the west/left in real life. The other two
sides have just windows and make it possible to have all six units like the prototytpe without any duplicated faces. It's
been given a black flat roof so you can even use it by itself, if you want: it's quite a generic design and groups of them
might be pressed into service as offices, schools, or even hospitals.
On the left of this screenshot you can see a building made from three of the units with two side walls and three roofs (plus
three rear units out of sight). On the right there's a unit by itself surrounded by the other components needed to start you
off: two side walls, one roof and one rear unit.
