Scottish Buildings Series Tenement Block Collection
Closie Unit Fower Fluirs/Tenement Unit Four Floors
Experience gained with the Modular Terrace Kits has enabled me to return to the Scottish series and make a start on a pet project - tenement buildings.
Tenement buildings (known colloquially as 'closes' - or here on the East Coast as 'closies' - from the term for the shared entrance lobby serving the individual appartments) were the mainstay of Scottish urban housing from the late middle ages right up to the 1950s, when the focus shifted to out-of-town council schemes ('estates' south of the border) and tower blocks (which might in any case be seen as direct descendants of the closies). Their strong stone construction means that many of these buildings, suitably modernised. survive to this day: despite massive demolition, our nearest city, Dundee, still has whole areas of them, and it's from a selection of these that the textures for this collection are derived.
Here's the most common building block reduced to its simplest form, with a door enclosing the lobby, and an internal stairwell. As with my previous content, you'll need some additions to complete the model: main chimneys; there's a typical 16-pot stack, or a rather simpler version with pots removed, as often seen nowadays on closies where the fireplaces have been replaced by central heating. There's also a gabled chimney, serving the rooms in the middle of the block, and giving the roofline a very characteristic profile, as can be seen in the screenshot. In addition, there's a roof ridge to straddle the joins between individual units, and an optional drainpipe set to improve the look of the rear where it's prominent. You'll also find a corner unit which can be used with the existing shopfronts I've made for the Modular Terrace Kit, with more to folllow.
The screenshot shows the item twice: au naturel on the right, but with some of the additions on the left.
