In the mid 1930s first german double-deck passenger coaches for suburban traffic were introduced. The very sucesfull units operated in push-pull service with aerodynamic steam engines on the so called Lubeck-Buchener Eisenbahn. The idea of double deck coaches came back after WW2 and the natoinalized Gorlitz factory now operating as VEB created a new design. Deutsche Reichsbahn started operations of this class in the early 1950s in the Berlin area. Many units like this model received cabs to operate in push-pull service.
