In the early 1970s Polish State Railways PKP retired a large group of older and prewar passenger coaches used in branchline service. The new type of local passenger coach was very needed. In 1973 PaFaWag Wroclaw released their new 120A type passenger coach. It was basically a modernised 104A carbody with no compartments and new door installed. The 120A together with 101A and 102A dominated branch lines for the next 15 years. After 101A and 102A types were retired, the 120A became the only type of classic passenger coach of domestic design left in local service. Most of them serve till today and it is possibly not going to change very soon.
