Small covered sheds with a platform in front were commonly used at branch line stations in Southern Germany and neighbouring countries. They served for storage of coal for the small locomotives stationed at rural stations for local services. They might also be found at a depot of a small privately owned branch line. The sliding doors could be locked to prevent theft of coal by the local population. No canes or other lifting devices for coal were fitted. To speed up the actual coaling process, coal was loaded into wooden baskets beforehand. The filled baskets were then carried to the locomotive after her arrival and emptied into the coal bunker. This coaling procedure has nowadays been revieved with some smaller museum locomotives.
