Bucket chain excavators are the direct descendants of the dredges employed from the 17th century in the Netherlands to deepen shipping channels and harbour basins. At the beginning of the 19th century the first steam dredges were built in the USA and the UK. Steam dredges were widely employed during construction of the Suez and Panama canals. Since the middle of the 19th century steam powered chain bucket excavators were developed by French designers for digging dry sediments like sand, gravel or clay above the ground water level.
The use of bucket chain excavators with lignite opencast mining in Germany started at the begin of the 20th century. The early models were rigid, steam powered and invariably running on rails. Nowadys opencast mining industry employs a variety of different types, which are electrically powered. While the larger types are still running on rails, the smaller ones are moving on crawlers. The bucket chain is motile and may be adjusted for cutting downwards, horizontally or upwards. The upper works with the bucket chain can be turned horizontally by 360 degrees around the central verical axis. Ihis feature increases versatility considerably in comparison to older models.
According to the nomenclature used in East Germany to classify opencast mining equipment this type was designated Es 3150. E is standing for chain bucket, and s for turnable upper works. 3150 is the volume in litres of each bucket.
The Es 3150 is one of the biggest types used for removal of overburden in conjunction with an overburden convejor bridge. Its service weight is 4500 metric tons. Usually two or even three such excavators are linked to one conveyor bridge.
The development of chain bucket excavators has come to an end as they are gradually replaced by bucket wheel excavators, which are even more versatile, allowing more selective excavation of lignite and overburden.
This asset was created as a mesh which is linked to the overburden conveyour bridge.
