The Maloja Palace Hotel is a creation (1882-1884) of count Camille de Renesse (? Brussels 1836-? 1904 Nice).
He was a former member of the provincial Council of Limburg and dreamed of creating the largest mountain tourist centre.
After a failed first attempt in 1875 to buy a plot of land in Celerina, he started in Maloja.
It was one of the largest in Switzerland at the time and cost 5 000 000 CHF.
De count wished to make Maloja to a spa for rich people.
So is the hotel Kursal, the current Maloja Palace.
It was luxuriously furnished and had 300 rooms, 20 salons, various dining rooms and concert halls.
The current Belvedere was supposed to be private stay of the count.
After the death of the Earl, the Palace changed a few times of owner.
In 1920 it ended up in British hands and was almost exclusively reserved for English tourists.
From 1959, the building was made available to the Chr?tiennes.
In 1982 was the 100 year aniversary of the Maloja Palace .
In 2006 the building was sold to a hotel operator. Since 2009 50 rooms are in use as a luxury hotel.
