Pennsylvania Railroad M70a Railway Post Office. Prior to the development of the interstate highway system, most of the country's mail moved via rail. The hook on the side was used to pick up mailbags without stopping the train. Often the PRR would run whole trains of baggage and mail cars with a coach used as a crew dormitory, as baggage and mail were the main revenue generating operations on passenger trains. These cars were deployed in the early part of the 20th century, and many saw use into the late 60's and early 70's.
