In the 1920s the need for new hopper cars in Germany rose enormously. Whereas other builders mainly opted for long bogie cars, Talbot designed short 2-axle cars. Although the long cars also proved successful, more than 5000 of the 'Talbotwagen' or 'Talbot cars' were built between 1928 and 1942, first only by Talbot but afterwards also by other builders. They first got the type code FM 50 and later Otmn 36 and were mainly used as ballast cars for track service. The ones that weren't used for service purposes were used to transport other lose materials like gravel and coal.
