Between 1940 and 1956 GE built 348 44ton switching locomotives for industrial and light shunting use. In 1943 the Australian Government imported four diesel electric, 44ton, shunting locomotives from the GE Company in the USA,under Lend Lease conditions, for use at the munitions factory at St Marys in NSW ( builders numbers 7920 - 7923) . Immediately after the war these locomotives saw service on the NSW railways, then in 1948 the Commonwealth Government took two of these locomotives (7921,7922) for use at the Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia. In 1950 the two locomotives that were in use at Woomera were aquired by the Commonwealth Railways, re-numbered DE90 and DE91,for light shunting duties at Port Pirie and Port Augusta. Powered by two Caterpillar D17000 engines delivering 380/350 HP, these locomotives remained in service until 1975.
