Pullman-Standard 60 foot Boxcar lettered for Western Pacific. Provided with ARN.
In the 1960s, Ford Motor Company, Pullman Standard and Santa Fe pooled their resources to develop a
standard box car to meet the transportation needs of auto manufacturers in the United States. Delivered in
1965, Pullman Standard's version is the most prolific example of this type of auto parts box car that
ultimately changed the face of automotive manufacturing and rail transportation.
The Pullman Standard 60-foot boxcar was originally designed in the 1960's to standardize automakers' options for shipping auto parts loads across the country. In addition to a new boxcar design, their interiors were stripped clean of racks, bins, and other fixtures, and containerized loads were fork-lifted into the boxcar.
These cars typically operated in a dedicated pool between a specific part manufacturing and assembly plant. Often the code for the pool was printed on the side of the car. If more than one railroad was involved in the movement between those two points, each would contribute cars equally based on the amount of miles they contributed. This means that seeing the same car in the same train and siding over and over again is quite prototypical!
Today, these boxcars are often used to carry an enormous variety of cargo types and are no longer dedicated only to auto parts.
