During the 1920s and 1930s, Canadian National acquired 9,653 composite boxcars of the Howe Truss 'Defacto Standard' design. At over 9,000 examples, the 503500 series was one of the largest single classes of boxcars in North America during the steam era. While the first 2,351 cars were delivered with wood doors, all later cars were delivered with Youngstown steel doors. However, doors were regularly swapped between early and late cars during repairs. In the early 1950s, most cars were rebuilt by Canadian Car & Foundry, at which time the cars received new wood sheathing and AB brakes. Examples of the 503500 class remained in revenue service into the late 1970s.
This model represents an car after the CC&F rebuilding. Dates on stencils are appropriate for the early 1950s.
