Union Pacific GTEL Diesel A-Unit
Equipped with a 850HP Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine, the A-Unit consisted of the cab and other control equipment. The engine used inside the A-Unit was used for yard, and short distance maneuvering. Numbered 1-30, these third generation turbines were the most powerful engines in the world. With a resemblance to that of a PA-1, the GTEL units were manufactured by Alco & General Electric. The turbine fleet pulled freight trains between Council Bluffs, IA and Ogden, UT. Union Pacific X-18 is now on display at Illinois Railway Museum.
