This is the Safety Bracket (or Worker's Refuge) portion of a nine piece kit intended to create a wooden style Trestle Bridge as designed and built by the Ways and Works Branch of the Victorian Railways from 1935. This Safety Bracket is intended to be placed at regular intervals along the length of the bridge (where practicable, on the 'downstream' side) and located at such a height, so as to have the lower support timbers appear to be extensions of the Bridge Decking. The angled support bracket should be centrally located so as to be between the two crossheads of the pier to which it should be attached.
