ANFO is the generic name for a mixture of ammonium nitrate (AN)
particles and diesel fuel oil (FO). It is used as a bulk-loaded blasting agent in open-cut and underground
mines and also in quarries. The diesel is dyed red which gives ANFO a pink colour to distinguish it from
ammonium nitrate itself which is white. For safety and security reasons, ANFO is often made at the mine
site to avoid transporting explosives on public roads. As a rough guide for setting up a Trainz industry to
make ANFO, the inputs are ammonium nitrate (94%) and diesel (6%) by weight. For use in mining, you
can assume that 1kg of ANFO will yield 5000kg of broken rock, coal or mineral ore
