These English Electric Type 4s entered service in 1967, the Class 50s began their days hauling passenger services North of Crewe over the non electrified section of BR's West Coast route. The completion of electrification to Glasgow saw the Class transferred to the Western Region, where they took over from the diesel hydraulics on express services; until being displaced by HST sets in the late 1970s / early 1980's.
The Class 50's remained on the Western system working secondary express and commuter services until their withdrawal in 1992.
This livery was applied to locos assigned to the South East region.
