In 1949, the New South Wales Railways released a passenger car that brough comfort to the long distance traveller. The S-Type passenger car featured air conditioning and a modern comfortable interior with reclining seats - a feature not found on most previous passenger cars. These cars were used on such services as the Northern Tablelands Express, Riverina Express, Central West Express, Melbourne Daylight Express and Brisbane Limited Express.

Originally marshalled in sets of 8 S-Type cars, a RUB set provided 96 first class and 212 second class seats, a dining car and room for 10 tonnes of luggage and parcels. Over time, the sets were re-mashalled to provide more first class seating, or cars removed when passenger numbers were low. Later, the RUB sets were disbanded and the passenger cars mashalled as required, often with H-Type cars and stainless steel sleeping cars.

Loco hauled passenger services were gradually replaced with XPT, Xplorer and road coach services and as such regular passenger services no longer use the S-Type cars.

The SFS cars featured second class seating.
