The VHO and MHO Brake Vans were built in the late 1920s-1950s to meet increasing levels of demand on rail traffic. Featuring a guard's compartment flanked by two storage areas, these vans had plenty of room for luggage and parcels and featured a coffin compartment and dog box (which were removed during subsequent upgrades). The VHO featured end doors and gangways for access to passenger cars, while the MHO's ends were sealed.
These vans were found on all types of services and were a mainstay on mail trains. They were even found on air conditioned express services, increasing luggage and parcel capacity.
In 1973 many were converted to KB Parcels Vans for use on mail trains.
The MHO Brake Vans featured a guards compartment and two storage areas for up to 20 tonnes of luggage and parcels.
