The BS and FS 65' passenger cars were the first steel bodied cars to be used by the New South Wales Railways in 1934. The cars were designed for use on country services and followed similar practices used on earlier timber bodied wagons, such as the continued use of compartments. Infact, the interior of these cars were near identical to timber cars, using Australian timber to line the compartments.
The BS and FS cars saw use over much of the state, regularly being used on a variety of trains from the slow mail trains to expresses such as the Federal City Express, Melbourne Express and Brisbane Limited. Like most passenger cars many were altered; the XBS and XFS recieved electrical power from the locomotive for heating and EFS from a power van, BSR and RBS were fitted with a buffet following the closure of many railway refreshment rooms and IFS and MFS became inter-urban car for commuter use.
The BSR cars provided first class seating for 24 passengers with buffet facilities.
