The N-Type steel passenger cars were designed as high capacity cars for use on short haul country tourist runs to places such as the Central Coast, Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands. They shared very similar dimensions to the earlier BS and FS steel cars, however they saw the departure of compartments for passengers.
They were originally organised in fixed sets of 7 cars (HFN, FN, FN, FN, BN, BN, HFN), but like all carriages in NSW, many soon saw alterations; from the ventilation system to adding buffets and sleeping car conversions.
BAM 2189 was converted from a FN car to form a new 'Brisbane Express' to Wallangarra in 1967 (other cars in the set were CN 2209, ABN 2194, FNR 2199 and an LHO van). It provided seating for 16 1st class and 32 2nd class passengers. This car differed from the remainding BAM cars in that the entrance door remained in the same place as the other N-Type cars.
