The first 16-car unit was delivered in December 1995, and this entered revenue-earning service from the start of the new timetable on 22nd March 1997 with one return Nozomi service a day operating between Shin-Osaka and Hakata at a maximum speed of 300km/h, making this the fastest service train in Japan. 9 sets in total are due to be delivered, with 4 sets available by November 1997 permitting the start of limited services between Tokyo and Hakata from 29 November. Although 300km/h running is only permitted on the Sanyo tracks between Nishi-Akashi and Hakata, the overall journey time between Tokyo and Hakata has been reduced from 5hrs 4mins (300 series Nozomi services) to 4hrs 49mins
